Other conditions that also influenced by female hormones (Estrogen and Progesterone ) and often co-occurs with Endometriosis are:

Adenomyosis

Adenomyosis is defined as presence of the endometrial glands and stroma within the wall of the uterus (the myometrium), it is usually described during ultrasound or MRI as heterogenous myometrium with either diffuse or scattered cystic spaces, the common adenomyosis is the diffuse type but adenomyosis rarely shown as one or more localised cysts within the myometrium often called Adenomyomas.

Adenomyosis commonly accompanied by global enlargement of the uterus with increased surface area within the cavity of the uterus, this can lead to abnormal uterine bleeding, painful periods or chronic pelvic pains.

Traditional treatment of adenomyosis is through hysterectomy due to the diffuse nature of the disease , however in cases of localised Adenomyomas or in patient who are desiring future pregnancy , other conservative approaches that preserve the uterus can be used such as surgical excision of the localised adenomyomas , insertion of Mirena device ,  or partial blocking of the blood supply of the uterus through a procedure called UAE ( Uterine Artery Embolization )

Uterine Fibroids (Leiomyomata’s)

Uterine fibroids are the commonest benign tumour of women during their reproductive life (quoted prevalence between 20 -25% ) , it is a benign tumour that arises from the muscle of the uterus ( myometrium )

According to their location, they can be described as Submucosal when they protrude through the uterine cavity or Intermural when they are located within the wall of the uterus or Subserosal when they are located on the outer surface of the uterus.

Fibroids often does no harm and just found incidentally during imaging tests, but they also can cause heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding , bulk-related symptoms such as pelvic pressure and pains or sometimes can affect the woman’s ability to conceive .

Treatment of symptomatic fibroids varies according to patient presenting symptoms, age , fibroid size and location , treatment options could involve the use of medications that can lead to reduction of the fibroids size , UAE , surgical excision of the fibroid ( Myomectomy ) or Hysterectomy.
